CONTEXTUAL STUDY SKETCH JOURNAL OF A TRADITIONAL STREET
Brief
Place identity is shaped by socio-cultural, economic, and political factors over time, influencing both physical and non-physical aspects. In a rapidly globalizing city like Kuala Lumpur, traditional streets may see significant changes in meaning due to urban development. This project proposes reading the "lexicons" of traditional streets through their tangible architectural qualities and intangible socio-cultural attributes. It helps students understand the specific contexts that construct the unique place identity and socio-cultural meanings of traditional streets.
Task
For my first task, I was instructed to select one of the designated traditional streets for a site visit to study its unique place context. I chose Jalan Tun H.S Lee for this assignment. Following this, my task was to identify and thoroughly research both the physical and non-physical contexts of Jalan Tun H.S Lee. This involved examining its architectural features, historical significance, and cultural aspects contributing to its distinct identity. Finally, I was required to create an A4 manual sketch journal, capturing the essence and character of the street through detailed sketches and annotations. This journal aims to visually document my observations and findings, providing a comprehensive understanding of the street's distinctive qualities.
REFLECTION
By completing the first assignment, I have developed Taylor's Graduate Capabilities (TGC) 1.0 and 3.0, which focus on Discipline Specific Knowledge and Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills. Firstly, I was able to apply theoretical knowledge in practice while understanding ethical issues relevant to my field of study. I also gained insights into professional architectural practice, demonstrating my knowledge and skills through the research on Jalan Tun H.S Lee.
Furthermore, this assignment enhanced my ability to work both independently and collaboratively. I learned to locate, extract, synthesize, and effectively utilize information. The task required critical and creative thinking, especially in planning the layout and analyzing problems to find effective solutions. This process improved my critical thinking skills and expanded my creativity, encouraging me to think outside the box and develop innovative ideas and strategies.
