Material Experience in Architecture: Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications
Project 1 (Group)
Brief
This project introduces students to the application of building materials in architectural design. Students will conduct a detailed case study on a chosen building, focusing on how materials are used as both architectural and structural elements. The study will explore the impact of these materials on the user experience and include a thorough description of their installation process to assess understanding of construction techniques. The goal is to deepen students' understanding of material selection and its influence on overall building design.
Task
In a group of seven, you'll conduct an in-depth case study on an intriguing building located in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. Your task is to identify and analyze five architectural materials and two structural materials used in the building. The group should focus on one material that has a significant impact on end users, providing a detailed illustration of its installation process. The findings will be presented on a single A1 board, including the building’s historical background, clear images and details of the materials, an analysis of the chosen material's impact on user experience, relevant building images, a conclusion on material usage, and references.
Final Outcome
REFLECTION
Reflecting on this assignment, I see how it significantly advanced my lifelong learning and problem-solving skills, in line with Taylor's Graduate Capabilities (TGC).
The case study of the Muzium Negara, deepened my commitment to lifelong learning. Conducting a site visit to obtain information and photographs that weren’t available online required initiative and resourcefulness. This experience highlighted the importance of engaging with real-world environments for a richer understanding beyond the classroom.
Analyzing five architectural and two structural materials challenged me to apply rigorous thinking and problem-solving skills. Evaluating these materials' properties and their impact on the building's design and user experience was crucial. Focusing on one material for its experiential impact and illustrating its installation process required both critical analysis and creative thinking.
Working with my group to present our findings on a single A1 board tested our ability to distill complex information into a clear and engaging format. This process sharpened our skills in critical evaluation, communication, and teamwork.
Overall, this assignment has been a valuable experience in applying and enhancing my lifelong learning and problem-solving abilities, preparing me for future challenges in architecture.
