Project 3 (Individual)

Space and Sensory: Self - Exploration through Spaces [Sensory Space]

Brief

Architecture goes beyond meeting the visual and physical needs, encompassing aesthetic and human body requirements like anthropometrics and ergonomics. It must also resonate with the desires of the human soul, spanning the realms of the mind, emotions, and will. Architects are thus tasked with not only crafting spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, and purposeful but also with contemplating whether these spaces are inspiring, poetic, or uplifting. The inquiry should extend to evaluating whether the architecture being created holds personal significance for the individuals it will embrace. In this holistic approach, architecture becomes a profound expression that not only fulfills practical needs but also engages with the deeper aspects of human experience and identity.

Task

In this project, the central objective is to reexamine and reinterpret the model(s) from Project 1, culminating in the formulation of a design intent revolving around the architectural experience of Path-Portal-Place. Simultaneously, a focused exploration into materials and structures takes place, involving a meticulous study of two to three materials—such as Concrete, Timber, Steel, or Glass—scrutinizing their characteristics, properties, and construction techniques. This comprehensive understanding guides the judicious application of these materials to the reinterpreted 1:1 structure, enhancing its spatial qualities. The iterative process unfolds with the exploration and refinement of ideas through test models, sketches, and drawings. As the design progresses, critical drawings, including exploded axonometric, floor plans, sections, and elevations, are meticulously developed to elucidate structure, joinery details, and overall design coherence. Ultimately, the assignment concludes with the execution of final models and orthographic drawings, thoughtfully composed onto a presentation board, encapsulating the diverse journey of design exploration and realization.

REFLECTION

Crafting both a model and a presentation board for my final project has proven to be a challenging yet enriching journey. It was far from a leisurely stroll in the park, often requiring multiple iterations and revisions. However, the process has imparted valuable lessons in perseverance, time management, and problem-solving.

Let's delve into the model-making aspect. It was no easy feat. Converting initial ideas into a tangible form posed a real challenge. Each attempt felt akin to solving a complex puzzle, necessitating careful consideration of how every element would come together. The frequent need for redoing was not a setback but rather an opportunity for improvement. Every tweak and adjustment represented a progressive step. It wasn't merely about perfecting the physical model; it was about refining and clarifying the underlying design concepts.

Then comes the presentation board – the visual storyteller of my project. This task went beyond assembling a collection of pictures; it was about constructing a narrative. Ensuring that every element on the board spoke coherently about my design journey posed a considerable challenge. The constant rearranging, refining, and rethinking mirrored the crafting of a visual essay, where each section seamlessly connected to the next. The process was a continuous journey toward achieving clarity and effective communication, making every decision on the board a deliberate and purposeful step.
