Project 2 (Group)

Structure and Body: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration-  1: 1 Bamboo Activity Structure

Brief

For Project 2, we are to design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific activity, in groups. The structure will be placed in a real dormant green space to activate its use. We will be working with bamboo and be required to understand the nature and characteristics of the material and demonstrate basic knowledge in construction. We will explore construction details, e.g. joints, joinery and structural quality with other supporting materials (rope, steel, tensile fabric). We are to develop our design through a series of workshops, tests and investigations involving scaled study models, exploring architectural elements and principles (learned from Project 1) and incorporating anthropometry and ergonomics into our 1:1 structure.  This project explores the notion of how architectural design can impact a space and its users and how one can be an agent of change within the context of architecture.

Task

his assignment involves studying bamboo properties, adding materials like rope, steel, or fabric. Learn from bamboo experts and human measurements for ergonomics. Form a design intent, integrating past learnings. Test ideas with models considering architectural principles and human proportions. Plan on-site construction of a portable bamboo structure. Conclude with building and creating final drawings and presentation boards.

REFLECTION

Undertaking the bamboo project brought about a distinctive set of challenges and prospects for collaborative creativity. The expansive team size necessitated efficient communication and coordination, urging us to explore inventive avenues for pooling our ideas and efforts.

Throughout the endeavor, these challenges prompted a continual reassessment and refinement of our initial concepts. The dynamic interchange of ideas within the extensive team facilitated a broad spectrum of perspectives, enriching the design process. The need for constant reconsideration and adaptation of our ideas became a consistent, yet invigorating, element of the project.

The plethora of viewpoints cultivated a resilient problem-solving mindset, empowering us to collectively surmount obstacles. In summary, the bamboo project not only served as a test of our ability to work seamlessly within a large group but also underscored the potency of collaborative thinking and persistent effort in tackling intricate design challenges.
