Design Strategies and Exploration

Brief

Project 1b is an individual architectural project at Taylor's University requiring students to advance their Project 1a group work into a 1,800–2,000 m² "Urban Living Room" and civic hub for George Town, Penang by Week 8. Spanning 3 to 5 stories above ground plus a basement level, the building serves as a public cultural gateway and social exchange space featuring areas for creation, expression, wellness, civic living, and short-term stays. The project emphasizes an iterative, inquisitive design process where students rigorously refine their scheme to meet local building codes, tropical climate demands, and heritage contexts.

Task

Students must follow a four-part methodology to develop their final submission: establishing a clear design position supported by a 200–300 word write-up and precedent studies; organizing site layout and spatial programming via bubble diagrams and scaled floor plans; refining building form and massing through physical study models and 3D diagrams; and selecting materials and structural systems that align with their concept. The final output requires a pin-up presentation consisting of 10–12 A3 or 5–6 A2 sheets, 1:400 study models, an A4/A3 design journal, and digital files.

REFLECTION

          Through the process of developing Project 1b, I have gained a deeper appreciation for architecture as an iterative, inquisitive journey rather than a search for an immediate solution. Transitioning from our initial group concept in Project 1a to an individual design proposal forced me to critically test my ideas across multiple dimensions, from spatial programming and building massing to structural systems and tropical climate responsiveness. Balancing the required 1,800–2,000 m² GFA with the complex requirements of an "Urban Living Room" in historic George Town challenged me to create spaces that feel genuinely civic, inclusive, and culturally grounded rather than purely commercial. Rigorously exploring site context, user movement, and building regulations helped me bridge abstract design intent with functional reality. Last but not least, using physical study models, sketches, and diagrammatic studies allowed me to refine my scheme step-by-step, reinforcing the vital lesson that thorough exploration is key to achieving a meaningful, well-resolved architectural response.
